(Former) Stock Exchange

Earliest evidence of organised trading was in 1698 at Jonathan's Coffee House, and also at Garraways.

In 1773 a new building in Sweetings Alley is built with a dealing floor and coffee room above. Name is changed to The Stock Exchange.

It has its own coat of arms: dictum meum pactum (my word is my bond)

The Stock Exchange Tower was built and opened in 1972. In 1973 the first female members were admitted to the market.

The 'Big Bang' in 1986 saw a deregulation of the stock market, and its structure changed to be a private limited company. A move to new headquarters in Paternoster Square in 2004 signalled a change of name to London Stock Exchange Group - after a merger with Borsa Italiana.

125 Old Broad Street (former Stock Exchange Tower) was renovated in 2004-7 to give additional office space, where the floor is extended beyond the perimeter and a new glass curtain wall added to the outside of the building.
