St Michael Paternoster Royal - College Street

Original 1219 church was destroyed in the Great Fire and rebuilt by Richard Whittington in the 15th century. Whittington had been an apprentice mercer and went on to become The Lord Mayor of London four times.

Sir Richard is buried in St Michaels and during the reign of Edward VI his body was dug up in the belief that he had been buried with treasure, but he was not. A later attempt to find his grave in 1949 uncovered a mummified cat!

The church is now a Mission to Seafarers
