Tallow Chandlers Company 21 - Dowgate Hill

Company formed around 1300, to regulate oils, ointments, lubricants and fat-based preservatives. It also made candles using tallow (animal fats) which were used by commoners and also used for street lighting in the city. 

Livery status granted in 1462 by King Edward IV

In the 17th - 18th century, tallow was replaced by wax candles, gas lighting arrived and tallow become important for soap making.
